How it works

Mesh, then membrane, then you.

A mesh screen at the inlet catches sand, silt, and leaf matter, which keeps the layer behind it from clogging. Water then passes through a hollow fibre membrane, thousands of narrow fibres that physically block particles larger than the fibre openings, and exits at the mouthpiece. Nothing electric, nothing chemical, nothing to replace.

Questions

Does it remove viruses?
No. Hollow fibre membranes filter mechanically and viruses are small enough to pass through. If viral contamination is a concern, which it is anywhere sewage may have mixed with the water, boil instead.
Does it remove chemicals or heavy metals?
No. Chemicals, pesticides, fuel, and dissolved metals like lead pass straight through. Those need activated carbon or reverse osmosis, not a straw.
Can I use it on sea water?
No. Nothing in this straw removes salt.
Is this a replacement for bottled or treated water?
No. Treat it as a backup for a clear freshwater source when you have no better option, not as a daily water supply.
How long does it last?
That depends entirely on how dirty the water is. Silty water clogs the membrane quickly, clear water much more slowly. When suction gets hard and backflushing does not restore flow, the filter is finished. We do not quote a capacity figure because a number without a test standard behind it is meaningless.
How do I store it?
Completely dry, somewhere cool and out of the sun. Damp storage grows mould inside the membrane. Check it before you rely on it.
Can children use it?
Only with an adult supervising. The suction is simple, but source selection is the part that matters and that is an adult decision.
